Our People

Growing Together: Our People, Our Future

At Goede Hoop Citrus, our core values revolve around two fundamental elements: our people and our product. We view our team as the heart of our company and our product as its soul. By investing equally in both, we believe that collective effort is key to achieving success.

As one of the leading industries in the region, Goede Hoop Citrus plays a vital role in the local economy, providing significant employment opportunities. We proudly welcome workers from Citrusdal and neighbouring towns, fostering a strong, collaborative community dedicated to excellence in every aspect of our business.

Permanent Employees

Peak Season Employees

Our teams are our greatest asset, and we’re committed to caring for them.

At Goede Hoop Citrus, we are committed to supporting our team with a comprehensive range of benefits that extend well beyond the basics. Our offerings include retirement plans, disability insurance, life coverage, medical benefits, housing assistance, transportation support, and even an on-site clinic with a qualified nurse.

We also place a strong emphasis on maintaining high standards in ethics and safety. Our dedication is reflected in our consistent success in yearly ethical and health and safety audits, where we proudly achieve outstanding results. These measures ensure that our workplace remains not only productive but also a safe and supportive environment for everyone.

The company employs 67 permanent employees and up to 800 employees during the season.

Goede Hoop Citrus (Pty) Ltd is a cornerstone of employment in the region, drawing its workforce from Citrusdal and the surrounding towns and districts. We are committed to ensuring that our employment conditions meet or exceed the standards set by South African Employment Law.

Our employees are our greatest asset, and we provide a comprehensive range of mandatory benefits to support them.

While the fruit packing industry does not have prescribed minimum wage levels, Goede Hoop Citrus ensures that our minimum wages are competitive. We use standard, accredited indicators to guide annual wage increases, considering factors such as inflation. Wages and conditions are reviewed and negotiated annually.

We also participate in annual external and independent ethical and health and safety audits, consistently achieving excellent results. Our commitment to high standards ensures that non-compliances are virtually non-existent, reinforcing our dedication to a safe and ethical workplace.

Strong Union Partnerships

At Goede Hoop Citrus, we prioritize strong and collaborative relationships with unions, ensuring that all employee-related decisions are made through thorough consultation and consensus. We are committed to a decision-making process that is never unilateral, reflecting our dedication to fairness and inclusivity in all aspects of employment.

Empowering Through Training

At Goede Hoop, we are deeply committed to uplifting employees from disadvantaged backgrounds. Through our development programs, nearly 100% of our junior managers have risen from general labourer positions. Our substantial training budget underpins this commitment, facilitating their growth and advancement into middle management roles.

Championing Equity and BEE

Through our broad-based Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) initiative, 11.3% of our company shares are held by Black employees, providing both permanent and seasonal workers with ongoing dividend payments. Additionally, our commitment to BEE is reflected in our board, which includes a director from a previously disadvantaged group, underscoring our dedication to inclusive governance and compliance.
