There is no doubt that Goede Hoop is market-driven. It is important to the company to immediately respond to changes or even anticipated changes. In this regard the company is constantly in search for new varieties to introduce to the market.
The fruit from Goede Hoop Citrus (Pty) Ltd can be exported without limitation, to any country in the world. The reasons for this luxury being that the source region have been declared black spot free and also the fact that the fruit from Citrusdal is not subject to greening disease. The aforementioned stands the company in good stead regarding exports to especially the USA.
A further competitive advantage is that orchards are planted on varying levels above sea level. Careful management of this practice allows for the availability and selection of fruit over a prolonged period. A large range of early and later cultivars can therefore be planted as well as specific selections within cultivars.
Traditionally the fruit packed by Goede Hoop was exported to the United Kingdom, Europe and the Middle East, though currently the USA, Canada, Indian Ocean Islands, Africa, Eastern Europe, Russia and Far East as well as smaller niche markets are being explored with great success. These markets are, however still under-developed therefore a more aggressive marketing campaign is presently being followed.
During 2016 in excess of 3.2 million cartons of fruit were packed and exported by Goede Hoop Citrus (Pty) Ltd.
The Satsuma is seedless and an easy-peeler. Its name was given in 1878 by the wife of the then USA minister to Japan. This cultivar is normally medium-small to medium in size. The colour of the skin as well as flesh is orange. It tastes good and has low acid levels.
The Navel Orange have the distinctive feature of having small secondary fruit embedded at the apex of the primary fruit. Generally speaking Navels are the earliest maturing of the Orange varieties. It is a seedless fruit of larger size than most others. The colour of the fruit is a deep orange, it have rinds that peel easily and a sweet and pleasant flavour.
The Clementine is an easy-peeler of excellent eating quality. It is very popular. Both externally and internally the fruit is of deep orange colour.
The Minneola has a round shape with a pronounced and distinctive neck. The rind does not only have an exceptional colour, being reddish-orange, but also has a particularly fine and smooth texture. Minneolas have a unique and delicious flavour.
The Shamouti is medium to large in size and has an oval shape with a slightly flattened stem-end. It is the easiest of oranges to peel and releases little rind oil in the process. It has a characteristic fragrance and outstanding rich and sweet flavour.
The Midnight’s main distinction are it’s exceptionally high juice percentage, flavour, near seedless ness and larger fruit size.
The Valencia is the most widely grown citrus variety. The fruit size is medium to large, roundish-oblong in shape with a well-covered moderately thin rind of smooth texture. Valencia’s have a very high juice content and good flavour although sometimes slightly acidly except when fully mature.
The fruit is of medium size with a light orange rind, fairly furrowed at the item – end and often with a partially concealed navel, giving it a distinctive appearance. The segments are tender, juicy and virtually seedless. The flavour is very sweet with sufficient acidity to give a fine well-balanced flavour.
The MOR originates from Israel. The segments are tender and have high juice content and exceptionally sweet flavour. (Brix levels in the range 12 to 15) The fruit is virtually seedless.
The Afourer has many outstanding appearance features: flattish shaped with a somewhat uneven shape, deep orange – coloured brightly pebbly rind. It is easily peeled like a Clementine. The fruit is of outstanding quality with a high sugar content yet good acid level, resulting in an intensely rich flavour. It is seedless when isolated from pollinators, but is particularly sensitive to cross – pollination
This is a red flashed navel variety. The internal quality of Cara-Cara navels that of Washington: the pulp is tender and the flavour rich, with good acidity retained later in the season. Cara-Cara being Italian for beloved.
